Volkswagen´s dieselgate scandal in USA and Europe caused a big hit to VW´s stock price last year. Also VW cars are not lost on their popularity between US car buyers.
But it looks like the car maker is playing the best defence by introducing the new electric car concept during the Detroit Auto Show Sunday night. The VW ID Buzz is reborn old classic microbus but with zero emissions.
Volkswagen didn´t say the new microbus is going to be produced for sale, but according to their spokesman we can expect a huge “electric offensive” by 2020.
“We are making electric mobility the new trademark of Volkswagen,” the carmaker said in a statement.
The ID has a 270 mile driving range, and a total of 369 horsepower from 2 electric engines.
The new microbus is all wheel drive, providing one electric motor in front and one in back. According to VW, the car is also able to drive fully autonomously. Driver´s seat can be turned around and the steering wheel can be hide in the dashboard.
The original VW microbus was very slow with not much power, but its electric version can launch from 0 to 60m/hr in just 5 seconds. Top speed will be limeted to 99m/hr.
